Curriculum Trunk Program
The Tolerance Education Program of North Atlanta and the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust have launched a very exciting new program called the "Curriculum Trunk Program". Started by the Holocaust Museum of Houston, this program is designed to "educate our educators" in teaching the historical facts relating to the Holocaust as well as other 20th century genocides and the consequences of prejudice and apathy in society.
The Georgia Commission on the Holocaust has donated 22 trunks to The Tolerance Education Program to begin the program. These trunks will be filled with identical educational materials including multimedia tools such as CD’s, videos, posters, maps, classroom sets of books, a curriculum from which teachers can create lesson plans, and other materials. These instructional aids are designed to teach social consciousness and good citizenship thus making students aware of personal responsibility and moral courage. The trunks teach about genocide with age-sensitive materials that encompass both social studies and language arts.
Once these trunks are complete the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust will distribute them to underserved areas through Regional Libraries across the state of Georgia. The libraries will then allow materials to be checked out by educators in that local area for use in their schools.
The Curriculum Trunk Program is great for any group to get involved in. The trunks each need to be cleaned and repaired as necessary. Next, individuals, schools, religious organizations, families, etc. can take a trunk and decorate the exterior sides. Once the trunks are ready on the outside, we will fill the inside with our materials. The last step is to work with the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust to get these trunks to Regional Libraries throughout rural Georgia currently lacking this type of
educational tool.
We have decided to start off slowly -- a few trunks at a time. If you have any interest in helping us with this amazing project, please contact Rebecca Gordon for more information.
